Guyana on a Building Spree
President Irfaan Ali just confirmed: Guyana Set to Build New Berbice Bridge. Promising one that’s Bigger, Taller, and Ready to Flex before the end of this year.
The new bridge will be high-span and permanent, unlike the old floating structure that’s been opening and closing since 2008 like a car trunk with arthritis.
From Floating to Flexing
The current bridge, a 1.57 km float from the Jagdeo era, served its time. But now Guyana wants something bigger, stronger, and less “please don’t break in the middle of rush hour.”
The new bridge will allow ships to pass freely beneath, cutting delays and finally bringing some 21st-century order to Berbice traffic.
The Big Bucks
Several international construction giants are already lining up bids:
- China Road & Bridge Corporation – US$205.8 million
- Vishwa Samooja Pvt Ltd (India) – US$465.5 million
- A few Chinese joint ventures also in the mix.
Negotiations ongoing under Public Works Minister Juan Edghill, with GY$5 billion already allocated in the 2025 national budget to kickstart works.
Bridges and Boomtown Energy
The Berbice upgrade is part of Guyana’s growing infrastructure revolution, following the new Demerara River Bridge and major highway expansions.
Ali’s message? Guyana done floating; we building solid now.
The Legacy
The original Berbice Bridge was a PPP baby under Bharrat Jagdeo, with National Insurance Scheme investments that actually made money (for once).
Now, the Ali administration buying out private investors and removing tolls — so the bridge becomes state-owned, toll-free, and open to all.
Since August 1, it’s already a free pass for commuters.
Bottom Line
Guyana’s no longer waiting for progress to float by — it’s building it, high-span and high-speed.
By next year, the only thing left floating in Berbice will be the fishing boats.
